Plate recto engraved: Sitting Owl - Hidatsa / From Copyright Photograph 1908 by E.S. Curtis. Sitting Owl was born in 1850. At the age of eighteen he accompanied a war-party for the first time. The following year he counted first coup on an Ogalala, and later on a Hunkpapa. When he was twenty-six, a war-party pursued three Sioux horse-raiders, one of whom he killed. During a Sioux attack on the Hidatsa village at Fort Berthold, North Dakota, the combined forces of Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara charged the Sioux: ten of his comrades were killed behind Old Dog as he counted coup on a dead enemy.
