From Volume 18, Northern Woodlands and Alberta, Canada, of The North American Indian. Plate recto engraved: Camp among the Aspens - Chipewyan / From Copyright Photograph 1926 by E.S. Curtis. In 1900 Curtis was inspired by a visit to the annual Piegan Sun Dance Ceremonies to begin his life's work producing a vast, comprehensive written and photographic study of the environment, customs, beliefs, rituals, and lifestyles of native Americans. To finance the project, Curtis was given an introduction to J.P. Morgan by President Theodore Roosevelt. Morgan and Curtis were determined to produce the most beautiful set of books ever published, consisting of 20 volumes of text and photogravure illustrations in a limited edition of 500 sets. Each book was accompanied by a portfolio of large photogravures. Approximately 300 sets were made before funding ran out for the project.
