By appropriating aesthetics, coding, and hardware from popular video games and websites, Arcangel’s multi-disciplinary work situates coding, hacking, and web design at the nexus of contemporary life and raises questions regarding the authorship and value of the art object. Absurd and sublime, Arcangel’s exploration of technology and his commitment to open source methodology creates a visual lexicon able to redefine the boundaries of digital aesthetics and artistic originality. The Lakes series, which began in 2014, deconstructs the presence of technology within our lives. The flatscreen television, a contemporary symbol of American consumerism and capitalist aspiration, is literally turned on its side, simply and comically subverted to accommodate the vertically formatted pictures of the Lakes. On the televisions, where we expect either static or dynamic images, we get instead this strange hybrid. In Football / Lakes, the juxtaposition of the player’s implied endurance with the audience’s perpetual watching, represented within the reverberation of the lake’s reflection, signifies the despotic cycle of voyeurism engrained within entertainment media. By applying a dated Java filter to the image to create a liquid horizon line, the contrast between the bottom and top halves of the work highlights the obsolescent nature of technology and its archival role in popular culture. Aimed at magnifying the inherent contradictions of the modern era, this work explores the temporal limitations of digital life.
