Untitled (head), 1982-84 C-print 86 x 48 in (218.44 x 121.92 cm) AP / 2+1AP Richard Prince B. 1949, Panama Canal Zone, USA Richard Prince, is known as the father of appropriation art and is celebrated in the art world as one of America’s best-known visual artists. By borrowing images and themes from mass media, advertising campaigns, pop culture and of other artists, his work redefines concepts of authorship and assumes more relevance in today’s image-sharing culture. His body of work is located in American subcultures and examines the precarious construction of American identity. His iconic subject matter includes cowboys, bikers, nurses, customized cars, and celebrities, capturing the spirit of his era while provoking controversy around issues of copyright in the art world. Untitled (head) exemplifies Prince’s process of appropriation. Searching out advertisements from pop culture and photographing them to create his own, Prince creates an incomparable and unquestionable point of view of ownership and originality despite their miscellaneous origins. His creative form becomes a language which encourages observers to be curious about their modes of seeing and thinking, thereby creating depth and engagement within the context of shallow popular media. In identifying and highlighting archetypes of consumer culture, Prince hints at the influence of advertising in shaping our understanding of ourselves. Through the appropriation and manipulation of visuals there is a meeting of emotion with agency, while the undermining of the dominant gaze creates space for reimagined identities and ideas to form.
