Signed by the photographer on the mount. Exhibition label on matting. A view of the base of the south tower of the Golden Gate Bridge while under construction, the suspension cable visible and the deck of the bridge not yet in place. A pair of worker's coveralls suspended from a clothesline above Fort Point. Peter Stackpole (1913-1997) was one of the original staff photographers for Life Magazine, working for the magazine from 1936 to 1960. He is best known for his images of the construction of the bridges spanning the San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge. The photographer's home was destroyed in the Oakland Hills fire of 1991, along with the majority of his negatives. Provenance: from the photographer's estate, by descent.
