He received his BFA in Photography from the renowned Pratt Institute in 1983, which was followed by his first solo exhibition at Printed Matter, Inc. in New York in the following year. González-Torres completed his studies with a MFA from the International Center of Photography and New York University. His works are often made of everyday objects, such as stacks of paper, puzzles or sweets. Their clear and reduced appearance is often compared with minimalism and conceptual art, whereas there is always a deeper meaning, charging social themes such love and loss, sickness and rejuvenation, as well as gender and sexuality. Besides, the artist often animates the viewers to physically or intellectually participate in his works. His sculptures of wrapped candies remind, for instance, of the metaphor of transcience, as viewers are asked to touch and consume the sweets. During his lifetime Félix González-Torres achieved a strong presence in solo and group exhibitions. For example, he was represented at the Venice Biennale, whereas retrospectives have already been organized in famous museums, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the MMK in Frankfurt and the Samsung Museum of Art in Seoul. Considering the early death of the artist, who died of AIDS, we immediately feel the autobiographical depth of his works.
