Chromogenic print Switzerland, 2006 Peter Fischli (b. 1952) and David Weiss (1946-2012) Signed and numbered in ink 33/120 Framed and matted Dimensions: 14 ½ x 21 ¾ in. (36.8 x 55.2 cm.) Frame dimensions: 23 ½ x 31 in. (59.7 x 78.7 cm.) Very good condition Estimate $2,400-$3,400 Fischli and Weiss began their decades-long collaboration in 1979. Together, they created an extensive body of work that transformed the commonplace into something new and completely unexpected. The piece shown here, from their series “Flowers and Mushrooms” (1997-1998), expresses the artists’ fascination with collection and documentation and is a clear example of their dynamic partnership. Each photograph in the series is a double exposure. One artist would take a series of photographs then hand the camera to the other person, who rewinds the camera for a second set of exposures, creating a deeply disorienting and strangely beautiful sequence of images. Peter Fischli (Swiss, 1952) and David Weiss (Swiss, 1946-2012) The works of Fischli and Weiss have been exhibited in museums and biennials world-wide and are in numerous public and private collections, including the Tate, the Guggenheim, and the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1995 they represented Switzerland at the Venice Biennale with 96 hours of video of everyday life in Zurich, shown on a dozen monitors. Their first solo exhibition in the United States was at the Sonnabend Gallery in SoHo in 1986. In 1996, a retrospective of their work organized by the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis toured to the San Francisco, Philadelphia, Columbus and Boston.
