Very good condition Estimate $12,000-$15,000 Massimo Vitali began his beach series in 1995 as a way to understand his fellow Italian citizens after a major shift in the country’s politics. These candy-colored tableaus are his most highly coveted among collectors, and this present lot is no exception. A rarity at auction, “Rena Majori” demonstrates the artist’s continued interest in the personal and public spheres of the masses. Massimo Vitali (Italian, b. 1944) Best known for his large-format color photographs of beach scenes, pools and leisure scenes often taken from removed vantage points. Born in Como, Vitali studied photography in the 1960s at the London College of Printing, and pursued a career in photojournalism in the 1970s for several European magazines, among other publications. In the 1980s, he began working with cinematography for television and film, before focusing on photography for purely artistic purposes. Vitali’s work is held in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, among other institutions.
