Ruscha, Editions, 1959-1999), B 4, illustrated on p. 84/85 Dimensions (slipcase): 18.5 x 14 x 1.5 cm Dimensions (leporello unfolded): 18 x 756 cm Good condition Provenance: Austrian private collection The leporello presents offset reproductions of b/w-photographs depicting the buildings of the Sunset Strip in the 1960s; Ruscha took the pictures with his motorized Nikon camera mounted to the back of his pick-up truck The present leporello is composed of numerous offset prints on white paper and was first published by Edward Ruscha in 1966. In this period Ruscha was fascinated by the genre of artists' books and thus used it to introduce the medium of photography to a wide audience. The leporello presents each building of the Sunset Strip, represented as a continuous sequence. As buildings, cars and people are recognizable as seen in the reality, this work is an important historical document of the particular period of time. The leporello's cover is titled at the front and on the spine 'THE SUNSET STRIP'. The work offered here is part of the first edition, second issue, (without the extra flap) printed in 5,000 copies. The leporello is in good condition with minor traces of age and wear. The narrow sides of the slipcase are slightly loose and stained and the Mylar cover shows light crease marks. The cardboard cover of the leporello is slightly kinked on the fold and shows very faint fox stains. The first page of the leporello is labelled by the American distributor 'Wittenborn and Company'. The slipcase measures 18.5 x 14 x 1.5 cm and the size of the unfolded leporello is 18 x 756 cm. Literature: Neal Benezra, Kerra Brougher: Ed Ruscha. Göttingen: Steidl, 2006, illustr. p. 24. Edward Ruscha (b. 1937) Edward Joseph Ruscha was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1937 and is especially known for his ironic, social critical paintings and prints. He produced numerous photo books in the early 1960s and had his first solo exhibition at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles in 1963; later, in 1969, he decided to join the famous gallery of Leo Castelli in New York. In the period from 1965 to 1969, Ruscha worked as a layout artist for the Artforum magazine under the pseudonym 'Eddie Russia'. From 1969 he taught as a visiting professor for printing and drawing at the UCLA. Ed Ruscha, who now lives in Los Angeles, has been the subject of numerous international exhibitions and museum retrospectives; there is currently the exhibition 'Reading Ed Ruscha' at the Kunsthaus Bregenz on view, presented until October, 2014.
