33 gelatin silver print on Ilford Multigrade FB paper, selenium toned France, 1949, later prints René Groebli (born 1927) - Swiss photographer and documentary movie cameraman Verso each with photographer's and copyright stamp, there inscribed in pencil with subject number, date of creation and different print numbers Verso each stamped 'Personally printed and selenium toned for stability on Ilford Multigrade FB' Sheet dimensions: each 23.8 x 30.3 cm Very good condition Provenance: German private collection The Swiss photographer René Groebli first became internationally recognized with his post-war series 'Rail Magic'; 33 fine tonal prints of the series in excellent condition These 33 black and white photographs are part of the photographic essay 'Railway Magic' that the Swiss photographer René Groebli created in 1949 during his honeymoon in France. At the time he was using a Rolleiflex-camera. The photographs mainly show Paris and the suburbs of Paris. Depicted are sceneries at rails, close-ups of rails and trains. The photographs are partly blurred and impress with a sophisticated artistic composition. Here and there appears a figure in the mechanical setting. The photographs of the series are an impressive witness of the post-war period of France. The series was published first in 1949 as part of a photographic book by Groebli and again in 2006 and 2009 as limited edition. Each photograph bears verso the photographer's and copyright stamp and is there inscribed in pencil with the subject number, the date of creation and different print numbers 'III/XII' (24x) and 'ea' (9x). In addition each photo is stamped verso 'Personally printed and selenium toned for stability on Ilford Multigrade FB'. The photographs are mounted with photo corners under mats. They are all in very good condition, some show slight frilling of the corners. The mats depict partly minimal traces of wear. The dimensions of the mats are each 30 x 40 cm and of the photographs they are each 23.8 x 30.3 cm. René Groebli (b. 1927) Born in Switzerland, René Groebli began to train as a photographer in 1944 at the studio of Theo Vonow in Zurich. He studied together with Ernst Scheidegger and Anita Niesz in the class of Hans Finsler at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zurich. Subsequently he trained to be a cameraman for documentary film at Central Film and Gloria Film in Zurich. Groebli also worked as photo-journalist producing reportages in England, Africa and in the Middle East. Additionally his works were part of the exhibition 'The Family of Man' that Edward Steichen curated in 1954 for the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Together with Hans-Peter Roth-Grieder, he founded the company 'Turnus Film AG' in Zurich. The artist was honored with a number of awards, among those were the 'Grafiker Preis der Deutschen Gebrauchs-Grafiker' in 1966 (German for 'Graphic Artist Award of the German Commercial Artists'), the 'Award of Excellence Typography Type Directors Club' in New York and the 'Lifetime Award' both in 2006.
