Silver gelatin print on cotton based paper, toned Tunisia, 1915 Rudolf Franz Lehnert (1878-1948) & Ernst Heinrich Landrock (1878-1966) - Photographic duo of the early 20th century Signed in the plate 'Lehnert & Landrock. phot. Tunis' lower left Good condition Sheet size: 23.9 x 18 cm Provenance: Private collection Hamburg, Germany An intimate portrait of two oriental beauties; photographs by Lehnert & Landrock fetch up to 9,000 euros at international auctions The present photograph by Lehnert & Landrock was shot in Tunisia around 1915 and shows two harem girls embracing each other tenderly. Their breasts are bare and only a simple white sheet is draped around their hips. The sensual motif is a typical work by the photographic duo, who sold exotic oriental images in Tunis and Cairo during the early 20th century. Erotic motifs of this kind were particularly sought after, for they illustrated the myth of the Orient as a place of sensuality and decadence. The photograph is in good condition with light signs of wear. The lower left corner shows a faint dog ear. On the back there is tape from a previous mounting in the upper right and left corner. The sheet is mounted under a mat with photo mounting corners. The image is signed in the plate 'Lehnert & Landrock. phot. Tunis' lower left. The sheet size is 23.9 x 18 cm. The mat measures 50 x 40 cm. Lehnert & Landrock (1878-1948/66) After settling down in Tunesia in 1903, Rudolf Franz discovered the charms of the Orient. After meeting Ernst Heinrich Landrock, the two photographers founded the company 'Lehnert & Landrock' selling postcards and photographs with oriental motifs. Many of their exotic pictures document the pristine nature of North Africa, but the photographic duo is primarily known for the erotic nude portraits of young women and girls. These kind of images depicting this side of the Orient were highly sought after at the turn of the century. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
