Signed, dated, titled and editioned in pencil on the verso. Numbered 1/2 (+ 1 A.P.). "Thomas Ruff's fascination with both photography and astronomy goes back to his time at school. So it was only natural that he should use the starry sky as a theme for his abstract pictures which he wanted to consist more or less of black space with many white dots. However, as he saw no way to achieve professional astronomical imagery quality with his own equipment, he decided to work with originals from the European Southern Observatory (ESO), an archive of 1,212 negatives. It was a collection of scientific photographs of the sky in the southern hemisphere, taken in the Andes with a special Schmidt telescope. All of them were 29 x 29 cm in size, and Thomas Ruff selected details which he then used as the basis for his prints [...]."
