Three vintage gelatine silver prints USA/Berlin, 1963 Will McBride (born 1931) - American photographer and visual artist Inscribed, dated and signed in pencil on verso, 'Rathaus Schöneberg Berlin, Kennedy, 1963, McBride' or 'Kennedy 1963, McBride' Sheet dimensions: approximately 25 x 36.5 cm Very good condition Will McBride is known for his distinctive photographs in the field of photojournalism. In 2004, he was honoured by the German Society for Photography for his 'style-forming work'. McBride's photographs fetch up to over 12,000 Euros at international auctions These three photographs were shot in 1963 by American photographer and artist Will McBride (born 1931). They document John F. Kennedy's (1917-1963) visit to Berlin on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift. It was the first visit by an American President to West Berlin after the construction of the wall. Kennedy held his legendary speech at Rathaus Schöneberg in front of around 450,000 people on 26 June 1963. His world famous phrase 'Ich bin ein Berliner' entered in the history books. The three gelatine prints depict the town hall square filled with people, each from above in different perspectives. On two photographs, Kennedy is seen at his lectern. The photographs give an impression of the crowd of people attending the speech. The curious spectators were not only crowded on the square, but also in the adjacent streets and on the windowsills, balconies and rooftops. The photographs are inscribed, dated and signed in pencil on verso, 'Rathaus Schöneberg Berlin, Kennedy, 1963, McBride', or 'Kennedy 1963, McBride'. They are matted on the upper side. The prints are in very good condition with minimal signs of wear. They show some creases and minimal marginal blemishes. The paper dimensions are each approximately 25 x 36.5 cm. The size of the mat is 40 x 50 cm. Will McBride (born 1931) The American photographer and visual artist Will McBride is primarily known as a photojournalist for well-known magazines, such as Geo, Stern, Paris Match and Illustrierte. Some of his provocative photographs created scandals in the 1960s. From 1950 to 1951, McBride studied at the National Academy of Design, and from 1951 to 1953 art history, painting and illustration at the Syracuse University in New York City. He also took private lessons with the American painter and illustrator Norman Rockwell (1894-1978). After his stationing in Würzburg during his military service in the 1950s, he studied philology at the Free University in Berlin. Since 1959, he worked as a freelance photographer, first in Berlin, and two years later in Munich. Since 1965, he primarily worked for the advertising industry in his own photo studio. Between 1972 and 1982, McBride lived in Tuscany, creating paintings and sculptures. In the 1980s and 1990s, he worked in his photo studio in Frankfurt am Main. In 2004, McBride was awarded with the Erich Salomon Prize of the German Society for Photography for his 'style-forming' work. McBride currently lives and works in Berlin.
