Woman in diner, N. Y. 1960. Vintage gelatin silver print. 16,2 x 24 cm (20,3 x 25,2 cm). Photographer's copyright stamp and number in pencil on the verso. Probably most famous for his moody pictures of James Dean walking the streets of New York, the photographer Dennis Stock has created many iconic images of 1950s/60s America. The atmospheric image offered here, taken in a NY diner, is reminiscent of an Edward Hopper painting, demonstrating the solitude which can exist in such a place. The strong diagonal of the benches and wall, the lighting, the seclusion of each party created by the cubicle-like seating arrangement, as well as the woman's posture contribute to the lonely mood and make this an intriguing image of postwar America. - Some crease marks in lower margin, as well as a few within image, a few indentation spots in upper right, remnants of labels on the verso and stain from label on verso shining through in lower margin, minimal buckling in side edges, otherwise a fine print.
