CHARLES HOSSEIN ZENDEROUDI (IRAN, B. 1937) CALLIGRAPHY, ACRYLIC ON CANVAS An intricate calligraphic composition by Charles Hossein Zenderoudi, rendered in acrylic on canvas. The surface is densely filled with interwoven Arabic script, arranged in an all-over pattern that creates a rhythmic, almost labyrinthine field of forms. Executed in a soft pink tone against a deep black ground, the letters flow and overlap, forming both legible passages and abstracted shapes that emphasise movement and visual harmony over strict readability. The composition reflects Zenderoudi’s pioneering role in the Saqqakhaneh movement, blending traditional Islamic calligraphy with modernist abstraction. The flattened pictorial space and repetition of script elements produce a dynamic interplay between text and ornament, transforming written language into a powerful visual structure. The work is signed and dated ‘Zenderoudi Hossein 72’ on the reverse, corresponding to 1972, and presents a refined example of the artist’s mature calligraphic style.
