Ian Dunlop OAM (1927-2021) was a pioneering ethnographic film maker. Born in the Uk he emigrated to Australia where he worked for the Commonwealth Film Unit/ Film Australia and made films in PNG and Australia. He gained international attention with rave reviews in Paris and other European cities, with his series 'People of the Australian Western Desert'. Ian's 22-film Yirrkala Film project, a collaboration with the Yolngu of north east Arnhem Land, recorded the impact of a mine and Yolgnu responses over 1970-1982. Ian was also invited by the Baruya of PNG to film initiation ceremonies, resulting in two series: 'Towards Baruya Manhood' and 'Baruya Muka Archival'.
