Au Lapin Agile is a legendary Parisian cabaret and tavern in Montmartre, in existence since the mid 19th century and eventually became one of the main centers of Parisian bohemian artistic life. Named by the caricaturist André Gill, who painted a sign with a rabbit in a hat holding a bottle of wine and jumping out of a large pot in a grotesque pose, the Au Lapin Agile at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries became a popular meeting place for painters, poets, writers, and musicians.
