Born on 16 January 1925 in Odorheiu Secuiesc (Romania, Transylvania) to Austrian parents, he contracted polio at an early age and fled with his family to Vienna in 1945 to escape the Red Army. studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Herbert Boeckl and Robin Christian Andersen from 1945 (graduating in 1953), married his colleague Annelise Karger, participated in exhibitions from 1948, became a member of the Vienna Secession (1950), and won prizes such as the Academy's State Prize (1953) and the City of Vienna Prize (1967). Karger created still lifes, landscapes, portraits and nude drawings with precise studies of nature influenced by Cézanne and Boeckl, in oil, watercolour and drawing; late mastery in watercolour with Viennese roof motifs from the window, mosaics with his wife Annelise for public buildings, distance from action art.
