Born on March 4, 1930, in Klagenfurt, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1949 to 1954 under Herbert Boeckl (Master School Prize 1953). From 1956, he lived and worked in Vienna-Sievering, where he also had a studio. He participated in exhibitions from 1955 onward (e.g., at the Künstlerhaus and the Secession). In 1963, he received the City of Vienna Prize, and in 1971, the Theodor Körner Prize. From 1973 to 1988, he was Professor of Painting at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Kraus created figurative compositions, nudes, and portraits with impasto, expressive colors and dynamic forms. He developed from the Boecklian tradition toward more abstract structures with Cubist and Surrealist elements, characterized by inner tension and material intensity.
