Rhoda Carleton Holmes Nicholls (British/American 1854-1930) "Venice" Oil on board presented in French made Italian style sgraffito frame The composition depicts a Venetian canal scene with stone steps descending into the water, animated by a figure drawing water at the canal's edge and sunlit masonry walls beyond. Loose, confident brushwork and a bright atmospheric palette convey the play of light on water and architecture.
