Bildnis Herzog Carl Christian von Sachsen Halbfigurenbildnis des etwa 40-jährigen albertinischen Prinzen Karl Christian Joseph Ignaz Eugen Franz Xaver von Polen und Sachsen (1733 Dresden bis 1796 Dresden) und 1758–63 Herzog von Kurland und Semgallen im roten mit dunkelgrünen Samtaufschlägen besetzten Justaucorps mit hellblauem Ordensband sowie Orden und Bruststern des polnischen Ordens des Weißen Adlers im Halbprofil, vor dramatisch bewölkter Sommerlandschaft, fein lasierend Malerei in kraftvoll leuchtender Farbigkeit, Öl auf Leinwand, wohl 18. Jh., unsigniert, rückseitig auf dem Keilrahmen Fragmente eines Speditionsetiketts, mehrfach, teils von Klebeband verdeckter Stempel "Staatlicher Kunsthandel der DDR – VEH Bildende Kunst und Antiquitäten – Antiquitäten Potsdam – Potsdam, Kleine Gasse 3 ..." und in Tusche, teils unleserlich bezeichnet "Graff – Carl Christian Joseph ... – Sohn [von] August III. von Polen, Herzog von Curland von 1758–1763 – starb 1796", 1774 schuf Anton Graff (1736–1813) ein dem unseren nahezu identisches ovales Kopfbildnis des sächsischen Prinzen Carl Christian von Sachsen in Öl, welches heute in der Alten Nationalgalerie Berlin verwahrt wird, ein weiteres Gemälde unter Verwendung eben jenes Kopfbildnisses Anton Graffs zeigt den sächsischen Prinzen in nahezu identischer Komposition wie unser Gemälde als Halbfigurenbildnis mit der charakteristischen Handhaltung vor dramatischer Landschaft, dieses Gemälde wird Johann Baptist von Lampi dem Älteren (1751–1830) zugeschrieben und wurde zeitweise für ein Portrait von Fürst Stanislaus Poniatowski (1754–1833) gehalten, doubliert, Altersspuren, im schönen Goldstuckrahmen, Falzmaße ca. 82 x 67 cm, beigegeben Kopie eines Gutachten von Prof. Dr. Helmut Börsch-Supan vom 15.06.2000. Portrait of Duke Carl Christian of Saxony Half-length portrait of the approximately 40-year-old Albertine Prince Karl Christian Joseph Ignaz Eugen Franz Xaver of Poland and Saxony (1733 Dresden to 1796 Dresden) and 1758-63 Duke of Courland and Semgallen in a red justaucorps with dark green velvet lapels and a light blue ribbon as well as the medal and breast star of the Polish Order of the White Eagle in half profile, in front of a dramatically cloudy summer landscape, finely glazed painting in vibrant colours, oil on canvas, probably 18th cent. Century, unsigned, on the reverse of the stretcher fragments of a shipping label, multiple stamps, partly covered by adhesive tape "Staatlicher Kunsthandel der DDR - VEH Bildende Kunst und Antiquitäten - Antiquitäten Potsdam - Potsdam, Kleine Gasse 3 ..." and inscribed in ink, partly illegible "Graff - Carl Christian Joseph ... - Son [of] August III. of Poland, Duke of Curland from 1758-1763 - died 1796", in 1774 Anton Graff (1736-1813) created an oval head portrait of Prince Carl Christian of Saxony in oil, almost identical to ours, which is now kept in the Alte Nationalgalerie Berlin, another painting using the same head portrait by Anton Graff shows the Saxon prince in an almost identical composition to our painting as a half-length portrait with the characteristic hand pose in front of a dramatic landscape, this painting is attributed to Johann Baptist von Lampi the Elder (1751-1830) and was at times thought to be a portrait of Prince Stanislaus Poniatowski (1754-1833), mounted, traces of age, in a beautiful gilt stucco frame, inner dimensions approx. 82 x 67 cm, enclosed is a copy of an expert opinion by Prof. Dr. Helmut Börsch-Supan dated 15 June 2000.
