Viceroyal school. Cuzco. Peru. 18th century. “Archangel Saint Michael as a child” Oil on canvas. 84,5 x 63 cm. Magnificent and curious representation of the Archangel Saint Michael as a child. The typical ornamentation of Cuzco art stands out, executed in this work with great detail and richness of materials and color. We see it in the lush and exuberant plume of feathers that tops the helmet, the decoration of different gems and the brooch that tops his cape, the boots that look like embossed gold, and his red skirt with gold embroidery. It is interesting to read the description of these Cuzco angels in the Isaac Fernández Blanco Museum of Hispanic American Art in Buenos Aires, as it can also be applied to ours: 'In this painting of Saint Michael the Archangel, almost all the stylistic traditions that influenced Cuzco painting come together. For example, the body posture and the arrangement of the military attributes are inspired by the Sevillian series of angels, particularly the prototype of Saint Michael disseminated from Zurbarán's workshop. The idealized and markedly androgynous physiognomy, [...] For their part, the rich lacework is typical of the costumes of the Inca nobility during the colonial period and conveys to the painting the symbolic and hierarchical significance that refined textiles have always had for Andean culture.' This lot has been imported, therefore its exportation permit from the Spanish Ministry of Culture is guaranteed and is exempt from Spanish culture export duties, for buyer outside the European Union.
