작품 상세

Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) Untitled (Flyfisherman) Late 1930s. The original oil on Bainbridge Illustration Board is signed, initialed, by the artist lower left side. The image of a gentleman contemplating his flyfishing equipment is composed in a way consistent with an illustration commission. A half-round portion is left open to accommodate potential text or marketing slogan, much like the designs Rockwell created for Schenleys Bourbon Whiskey. In the present example, a translucent amber glass of whiskey sits off to one side, a companion to the enjoyment of the moment, much like the gentleman's pipe with its red ember. Rockwell produced a number of advertising illustrations for Schenley's Cream of Kentucky Bourbon through the late 1930s. Many included taglines in the form of a question and portrayed active, successful men of taste engaged in masculine pursuits. This image in that same vein appears to be an unrealized draft study. Purchased from Heritage Auctions in 2018, the current owner commissioned a custom mat to complete what he saw as complimenting the scene. The original work is intact and unattached and can be displayed in any manner, including the current arrangement. A label from Illustration House verso reads, 'This ad may have been planned for Schenley Whiskey, but was never executed. The white space was left for the ad layout and was probably designed to hold text.' Board measures 14.75 x 18 with a framed size of 22.5 x 25 inches.
