David Johnson (1827-1908) Study in Catskill Clove 1849 The interesting view of sunlight and shadow on a pass through the Catskills is signed D. J. lower right front and dated '49; further signed and dated again verso with the artist's DJ monogram in pencil near the inscription, '' one of my first sketches, Catskill Clove.'' In this case, 'clove' is an archaic term referring to a cleft or gorge in the landscape. Dramatic cloves in the Catskills, some as deep as 2500 feet with steep rock walls, were sites of inspiration for early 19th century American landscape painters and Hudson River School artists. Board measures 15.5 x 13.5 with a framed size of 20 x 18.25 inches.
