Wallis, George Augustus (1761 Merton - 1847 Florence, Scottish landscape painter and draughtsman), "Moonlit Landscape with Waterfall", oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left Wallis 1812, 36.5 x 52 cm. Dr. Monika von Wild, author of the catalogue raisonné on Wallis, confirms the painting's authenticity (email dated 29 August 2024). She surmises that the work is based on a sketch of a landscape in northern Italy that can no longer be traced today, which the artist may have made on his way from Italy to Heidelberg in 1811/12. Dr von Wild writes: "In this perfectly composed painting, the artist has avoided the overly heroic elements of later pictures (1816). [...] For me, it is one of the most successful paintings known to me by Wallis and proof of his contemporary recognition." Sie vermutet, dass das Werk auf einer heute nicht mehr nachweisbaren Skizze einer oberitalienischen Landschaft beruht, die der Künstler 1811/12 auf dem Weg von Italien nach Heidelberg angefertigt haben könnte. Dr. von Wild schreibt: „Im perfekt durchkomponierten Gemälde hat der Künstler das übermäßig Heroische späterer Bilder (1816) vermieden. […] Für mich eines der gelungensten Gemälde, die mir von Wallis bekannt sind und Beweis seiner zeitgenössischen Anerkennung.“
