JACQUES FRANCOIS JOSEPH CARABAIN (1834-1933, ACTIVE / LIVED IN BELGIUM, NETHERLANDS) OIL ON PANEL EUROPEAN STREET SCENE IN AN ELABORATE GOLD GILT WOODEN FRAME, SIGNED LOWER LEFT "J. CARABAIN", A superb 19th-century oil-on-canvas European street scene by Jean (Jan) Carabain (Belgian, 1834–1933), celebrated for his detailed architectural views and bustling cityscapes. Signed “J. Carabain” at lower left. This exquisitely painted work depicts a lively Old World street with merchants, figures in period dress, horse-drawn carriage, and richly rendered historic architecture. In the distance, an ornate cathedral rises at the top of grand stone steps, giving the composition striking depth and atmosphere. Carabain’s hallmark style is evident in the meticulous brickwork, tiled roofs, and animated market activity. Presented in an exceptionally elaborate carved and gilt gesso frame with deep relief scrollwork. Jean/Jan Carabain was a prolific painter known for his romanticized views of European cities including Paris, Bruges, and Amsterdam.
