Marc R. Hanson (American, b. 1955). "Mt. Moran" oil on canvas, 2022. Signed at lower right and titled and dated on verso. A monumental sweep of the Tetons rises into view, its ridges carved in confident strokes that speak to the immediacy of painting outdoors. In "Mt. Moran," Marc R. Hanson captures one of Grand Teton National Park's most commanding peaks with the urgency and clarity that only plein air practice allows. The mountain dominates the canvas, its facets shifting from cool slate to warm umber as the light pulls across the rock face. Snowfields cling to the crevices like lingering notes of brightness, setting a crisp cadence against the darker stone. Beneath the towering mass, a band of pine trees casts upward in deep greens and russet shadows, grounding the scene with a sense of scale. Hanson's brushwork moves between bold, textural passages and softer transitions of color, creating a landscape that feels at once rugged and vibrantly alive. Size of painting: 16" W x 16" H (40.6 cm x 40.6 cm); of frame: 17.75" W x 17.75" H (45.1 cm x 45.1 cm) His long experience studying and teaching the principles of representational painting reveals itself here not through overt instruction, but through the quiet assurance of each mark. Painted on site at Grand Teton National Park, the work carries the unmistakable presence of a moment witnessed directly - shifting weather, changing light, and the charged stillness of high elevation air. Hanson's lifelong connection to varied landscapes, shaped by years of moving across the country and exploring its wild spaces, adds a quiet intimacy to his portrayal of this iconic peak. "Mt. Moran" stands as both a record of place and a testament to the painter's pursuit of joy within the natural world, inviting viewers to share in the immediacy and wonder of the mountains rising before him. About the artist: "Having grown up in a military family, Marc's youth was spent on the move. He was born in Oxnard, California and spent some of his early school years there. But his geographical resume soon included Alaska, Florida, Arkansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and Norway. After his father's retirement from the Air Force, Marc's family settled in the small northern California community of Loomis. Marc began college as a biology major, but soon applied to and was accepted into Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, majoring in illustration. After Art Center and a brief stint as a staff illustrator in Sacramento, California, Marc moved to Minnesota where he lived for 33 years while raising a family and pursuing his art. Marc has recently lived in Colorado and Mississippi before settling down on Tybee Island, GA. "I have pursued a career as a painter for many years now. Along the way my methods, materials and focus have evolved. A naturalist at heart, the landscape is the perfect vehicle for expressing the joy I have for the world that surrounds me. My real interest and challenge as a painter is how to best manipulate the core principles of painting into effective visual statements. I'm most successful when I'm able to communicate that joy to the viewers of my paintings." Marc teaches landscape painting workshops in many locations nationally. "I love working with other painters in their pursuit to better their craft. My goal is not to have them assimilate my style and technique, but to teach them how to more closely examine the subject and apply the principles that representational painters must follow to become effective visual communicators." He has shown his work in galleries and museums nationally and internationally since the early 1980's. He is a Master Signature Member of The Oil Painters of America (O.P.A.) He is a Master Signature Member of The Oil Painters of America (O.P.A.M.), having won an Award of Excellence at the O.P.A. National Exhibit in 2000, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
