A 20th century painting on platex portraying Praça do Comércio, Lisbon’s grandest public square, with Machado de Castro’s equestrian statue of King José I commanding the scene. The setting recalls the historic footprint of the Paço da Ribeira (Ribeira Palace), which served as the seat of Portuguese power for nearly 250 years. Signed and dated Silva Vieira, 1987 in the lower right. Silva Vieira (1939-200) was a Portuguese painter celebrated and known for his vibrant depictions of Lisbon’s intimate street scenes.
