Thurloe Conolly (1918-2016) Deserted Rectory (Co. Mayo) Oil on board, 59 x 74cm (23¼ x 29) Signed; inscribed verso The son of an engineer, Thurloe Conolly was born in Cork in 1918. Thurloe’s father introduced his son to the drawing techniques from an early age, however, he was largely self-taught as an artist. It was not until the outbreak of the Second World War that he began to paint full time, encouraged by his artistic circle of friends such as Anne Yeats and Ralph Cusack. Conolly went on to exhibit with the White Stag Group from 1942. His work from this period is influenced by the Neo-romantic and Surrealist movements, citing artists such as John Piper and Christopher Wood. After the War, Conolly went on to show in the Irish Exhibition of Living Art and with Waddington’s amongst others. Adam Pearson, October 2025
