Margaret Dovaston, British 1884 - 1954  An Early Start, Early 20th Century Oil on Canvas measuring H 18.25 x W 24.5 x D 1 inches Signed Bottom Left Framed in a Gilt Gold Frame measuring H 24.5 x W 30.5 x D 2.5 inches Condition: Good Margaret Dovaston was a British painter best known for her detailed renderings of imagined English interiors and historical scenes from various time periods. She was aided in creating these by her extensive and rare collection of period costumes and furniture, many of which make recurring appearances in her works. They tell a story in which the spectator is invited to fill in the details at will, the artist said of her paintings. She often depicted the glory of the British Empire, and many of these pieces were either commissioned or later purchased by members of the British government or royalty. Born on March 3, 1884 in Battersea, England, Dovaston studied at the Royal Academy School and became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1905. She died in 1955 in London, England.
