Max Scharf American (Missouri), 1933-2009 Bear Lake Oil on canvas Signed and dated 2004 lower right, also on verso with gallery label. A view of Rocky Mountain National Park, framed. Max Scharf was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1933. He was formally trained at Washington University School of Fine Art in St. Louis in the early 1950's, before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953. Subsequently he was sent to Engineering Drafting School at Ft. Belvoir, VA and assigned to Ft. Leonard Wood, MO to work in a field printing plant as an Army Artist, Film Stripper and Plate-maker. After being honorably discharged in late 1955, he eventually returned to St. Louis to work as Art Director for Vi-Tronic, Inc, a manufacturer of executive gifts. In 1963 Scharf left corporate life to start his own business, and for the next 27 years he was self-employed in the corporate world utilizing his artistic and business skills. In 1991 opened his art studio in St. Louis and devoted himself full-time to a career as an expressionist painter.
