Watercolor, signed and dated lower left HB Warren 1907. Subject identified in two places on reverse. Sutton Island lies between the other "Cranberry Isles" and Mount Desert Island to the north. 9 1/2" x 13 1/2" sight, in period gold painted frame, overall size 12 1/4" x 16 1/4". Warren was born in Manchester, England and came to the US when he was 17. He studied under Charles Herbert Moore and Charles Eliot Norton at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School and Harvard University. Between 1912 and 1930, Warren taught watercolor at Harvard's School of Architecture where Harold's brother Herbert was dean. Warren traveled widely and painted scenes from all over the world. His work hung at the Boston MFA and Cleveland Museum during his lifetime, and has become even more sought after in the decades since, particularly his scenes of coastal Maine. Warren was a member of the Copley Society, the Boston Society of Architects, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; American Federation of Arts, and the Boston Society of Arts and Crafts.
