Oil on canvas, seemingly unsigned, in ornate antique frame. A late 19th century or early 20th century homage to Paul Delaroche's monumental 1836 work depicting soldiers of Oliver Cromwell taunting King Charles I just prior to his execution in 1649. 41 3/4" x 54 7/8", frame size 53" x 65 1/2" The original Delaroche piece currently resides at the National Gallery in London. It had been in the Bridgewater Collection in London, and was thought to be lost in the Blitz of 1941. That painting, which is three times the size of this reproduction, was rediscovered in Scotland in 2009, having been rolled up and stored after the war. Provenance: From a Long Island, New York Estate. Purchased at auction in New York, 1950's.
