ROBERT SALMON (BRITISH-AMERICAN 1775 - ca.1858) South Stack Lighthouse and the Holyhead Signal Station, Anglesey, Wales, 1842 oil on board 25.5 x 20.4 cm (10 x 8 in.) framed dimensions: 38.5 x 33.5 x 6.5 cm (15 1/8 x 13 1/4 x 2 1/2 in.) LOT NOTES Robert Salmon was a pioneering British-American maritime painter whose meticulously rendered seascapes and harbor scenes bridge the stylistic worlds of late 18th-century topographical art and the emerging Romantic movement. Born in Whitehaven, Cumberland, in 1775, Salmon was largely self-taught, developing an early fascination with ships, coastal life, and atmospheric light - subjects that would define his career. South Stack Lighthouse and the Holyhead Signal Station, Anglesey, Wales exemplifies Salmon’s characteristic precision and quiet grandeur. Painted in 1842, the work captures the rugged coastlines of northern Wales with a luminous serenity, balancing scientific observation with poetic mood. The sweeping vista, dotted with sailing vessels and anchored by the crisp geometry of the signal station, reflects Salmon’s deep understanding of maritime geography and his mastery of composition and perspective. The delicate handling of light across the calm sea - illuminating both human industry and natural majesty - reveals the artist’s rare ability to infuse topographical accuracy with emotional resonance. Salmon worked extensively in England and Scotland before emigrating to America around 1828, where he became one of the earliest practitioners of the Luminist style in the United States. His detailed harbor views of Boston, painted during his years there (1828–1840s), earned him a reputation as one of the finest maritime painters of his generation. Though he died in relative obscurity, Robert Salmon’s legacy endures through his influence on later American marine artists, including Fitz Henry Lane and the Hudson River School painters. His works, housed in major collections such as the Peabody Essex Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, remain celebrated for their clarity, balance, and transcendental light - qualities vividly embodied in South Stack Lighthouse and the Holyhead Signal Station CONDITION Observed in frame, the work is in good condition, overall craquelure, UV light inspection showed several very thin restoration lines N.B.
