NATALIA NESTEROVA (RUSSIAN 1944-2022) Lobsters, 2003 oil on canvas 127 x 147.3 cm (50 x 58 in.) signed dated and titled on verso PROVENANCE Acquired directly from the artist by the current owner. LOT NOTES A leading voice of late-Soviet and contemporary Russian painting, Natalia Nesterova was celebrated for her poetic, surreal figuration and luminous color. Born in Moscow in 1944, she trained at the Moscow State Art Institute (Surikov) under Dmitry Zhilinsky and joined the Union of Artists of the USSR in 1969. By the 1970s she had developed her signature style: theatrical, dreamlike compositions populated by enigmatic figures, masked faces, and recurring symbols such as doves. Nesterova exhibited internationally from the 1980s onward, with acclaimed shows in New York, Madrid, and Moscow, and was named an Honored Artist of the Russian Federation and Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts. Her works are held by the Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the Guggenheim, and major private collections worldwide. Nesterova died in New York in 2022. CONDITION The painting is in good condition, a very small scuffing line upper left, a miniscule spot of paint loss along the upper edge. N.B. Condition reports are available upon request.
