The painting depicts the three figures of the Virgin Mary, Jesus and Joseph against a dark background. The Virgin Mary is depicted in a three-quarter portrait in a blue-and-red robe and headdress, her loving gaze and shining eyes directed outward from the painting. With her right hand she holds the almost naked baby Jesus, who is standing on a stone slab, and her gaze is directed downwards, probably to grasp her left hand. To the right of Mary, depicted in a moving pose, is Saint Joseph, with a full beard and dressed in blue-brown clothing, his face expressed with strong emotion. Light falling almost completely from above from the left illuminates the child and Mary, while only the bright part of Joseph's face is illuminated.
