Carlo Domenici, Livorno 1897 - Portoferraio (LI) 1981 (Livorno 1897 - Portoferraio (LI) 1981) - Carlo Domenici was born in Livorno on March 18, 1897, into a modest but culturally vibrant family: his father Cesare was a marble worker and played in the town's Philharmonic, while his mother, Matilde, came from a family of artisans. From a young age, Domenici showed a natural talent for drawing, which was encouraged by the poet and journalist Giosuè Borsi, a family friend, who urged him to pursue art. At the age of thirteen, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he studied drawing, etching and lithography, approaching the style of the Macchiaioli. In 1913, when he was only sixteen, Domenici made his first painting, "Figura di Bambina," and exhibited it at the Secession Exhibition at the Società Amatori e Cultori di Belle Arti in Rome. In 1917, the famous composer Pietro Mascagni bought one of his works entitled "Venezia Livornese," recognizing the young painter's talent. That same year, Domenici married Bianca. In 1920, he was among the founders of the Gruppo Labronico, an association of Leghorn artists who met at the Caffè Bardi, sharing a love of en plein air painting and Tuscan landscapes. Domenici took an active part in the group's exhibitions and, in 1979, upon Renato Natali's death, became its president, holding the position until his death. His artistic production focused mainly on landscapes and scenes of rural life, with particular attention to the Maremma, Elba Island and Tuscan seashores. His works, often done on small tablets, are distinguished by his use of warm colors and his ability to capture the light and atmosphere of the places depicted. Favorite subjects included peasants at work, oxen grazing and views of villages and harbors.Domenici exhibited his works in numerous exhibitions, both in Italy and abroad, including the Quadriennale d'Arte in Rome in 1924, the South American Exposition in 1926, the Venice International Art Biennale, the Tokyo International and a solo show in Manila. In 1950, he participated in the Fifty Years of Tuscan Painting Exhibition in Florence and, in 1957, in the National Exhibition at the Maschio Angioino. In 1946, he founded the Gruppo Artisti Elbani and established the Llewelyn Lloyd Prize in Portoferraio, in memory of the painter who lived and worked on Elba Island. Domenici also took an interest in local politics, serving as town councilor in Portoferraio. After the death of his first wife, he joined Plava Cioni, with whom he had a son, Claudio, who followed in his father's footsteps and became a painter under the stage name Claudio da Firenze.Carlo Domenici died in Portoferraio in 1981.
