Pietro Morando, Alessandria 1889 - Alessandria 1980 (Alessandria 1889 - Alessandria 1980) - Pietro Morando was born on June 5, 1889, in the Orti neighborhood of Alessandria. From a young age, he showed a marked inclination for drawing, which he cultivated by occasionally attending the Accademia Albertina in Turin. In 1913, thanks to a scholarship, he enrolled in painting courses at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. During this period, he came into contact with Angelo Morbelli, whose studio he frequented, temporarily sharing an interest in pointillism. His experience in World War I was decisive for his artistic production. During the conflict, he made numerous drawings, often with makeshift means, documenting life at the front and the tragedy of war. These works were later collected in the volume "I Giganti," with an introduction by sculptor Leonardo Bistolfi. After the war, Morando settled permanently in Alexandria, although he made extensive trips to France and overseas. He frequented for decades the Milan studio of Carlo Carrà, with whom he shared a friendship and deep cultural exchange. His painting was characterized by a simple and incisive style, with intense colors and decisive strokes, which gave strength and poetry to the subjects depicted, often inspired by the daily life of poor people, such as porters and peasants, as well as views of his city and the Monferrato countryside.Morando exhibited his works in numerous exhibitions, including the Promotrice di Torino from 1920, the Quadriennale di Roma and the Triennale di Milano. He participated in the Venice Biennale in several editions: 1924, 1926, 1928, 1932, 1934, 1948, 1950 and 1956. In the 1950s, his exhibitions at the Promotrice were held together with the younger Alexandrian artist Franco Sassi, who was his admirer. His works are preserved at the Italian Historical Museum of War in Rovereto and the Civic Art Gallery of Alessandria.Pietro Morando died in Alessandria on September 24, 1980.
