Provenance: Sold by Scottsdale Fine Art Auctions in 2018 Biography from the Archives of askART As an illustrator for twenty-five years, Michael Dudash then devoted himself exclusively to fine art easel painting after his children left for college. He became a painter of "images of dramatic realism that are bathed in a mix of light, hidden shadows and romantic atmosphere". (Wilkinson) Among his subjects are cowboys riding horses in western landscape, western figures, still life, snowscenes, child and adult figures and domestic genre. Dudash was born in Mankato, Minnesota and attended high school there followed by art studies at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in Minneapolis. Growing up, he had early interest in art and took offered classes in grade school and high school. He seemed especially talented in depicting birds and doing caricatures of classmates and adults. His early training as a fine artist was interrupted by a job offer to be a staff illustrator for McGraw-Hill Publishing Company, which launched him into a successful freelance career. He produced over 1200 illustrations for book, magazine and art publishers, advertising agencies, design firms, film companies and corporations, and he is listed in the Illustration House's Illustrator In America by Walt Reed. Some of his clients include: The Readers Digest, the US Postal Service, the United Nations, Time/Life, Disney Studios, Bantam/Doubleday/Dell and Warner Bros. Dudash has written and published articles for several art industry publications, conducted painting and illustration workshops, and been a guest lecturer at several colleges, universities and industry organizations. Most of his time in recent years has been focused on selling original oil paintings and on collaborative projects with several well-known Christian publishers, where he has been able to express his personal Christian faith through fine-art prints, books and gift products. Of his awards, the most recent is the Fredrix Artist Canvas Best Portrait Award at the Oil Painters of America Show held in Kirkland, Washington during May 2004. For many years, he worked out of his home and studio in Waterbury, Vermont, where he lived with his wife Valerie and children Alison, Elisabeth and Micah. When the children were raised, the couple moved to rural Pennsylvania, where they bought 17 acres of land. Making this move in his early 50s, Dudash regards it as "an oasis of inspiration among rolling hills, dairy farms, and thick forests. . .an idylic setting that offers up infinite light, color and composition."
