Carlos Lopez-Ruiz Colombian, (1912-1972) children flying a kite / landscape oil on velvet / oil on board Signed lower right. Biography from the Archives of askART: Before coming to the United States, Carlos Lopez-Ruiz was an established illustrator and caricaturist in his native Bogotá, Colombia. In 1953 he came to the Corcoran Art School in Washington, D.C. on a two year scholarship. His ensuing art education included seven years of intensive study of the hundreds of old masters in the Great Art Gallery and Museum collections in the United States, including the National Gallery, Phillips Gallery, and the Fine Art Branch of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington; the Metropolitan Museum and Museum of Modern Art in New York; and galleries in Philadelphia and California. Finding the need to study among his chosen subjects, he went to México where he lived and painted for three years before returning to the United States and California. He had a studio and gallery on Corley Avenue near Leffingwell in Whittier. His works have been exhibited in Washington D.C., New York, Virginia, Texas, Mexico, Bogotá (Colombia) and throughout California.
