Pène du Bois, Yvonne (1913-1997) Watercolor Streetscape, Morristown, New Jersey. 1940. Watercolor on paper, twice signed and dated by Pène du Bois in ink on the lower right corner of the image, mounted and matted (open tear affecting very little of the composition to lower left corner, small area of loss where detached from one stub, verso toned); 26 ¾ x 21 in. Based in New York, Yvonne Pène du Bois received her artistic training at the prestigious Art Students League under the tutelage of her father, artist Guy Pène du Bois. Yvonne is known for her compositions depicting quotidian life, with a particular emphasis on urban landscapes and figurative paintings. Multiple members of the Pène du Bois family are well-known creatives, with her cousin William Pène du Bois winning a Newbery Award for his illustrated book The Twenty-One Balloons, and their cousin Raoul Pène du Bois, who won two Academy Awards for his costume and scenic designs.
