Connecticut/ New York, 1849 - 1922. Oil on canvas, signed, titled and dated "Portrait of Miss Sarah Porter, painted about 1880, RB Brandegee, Farmington". Miss Porter is seated in a garden chair surrounded by pink fuchsia. Noted on the back "The Flowers and Birds are Symbols of Miss Porter's Scholars". Retains a 1922 exhibition label for "The Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts" in addition to a plaque on the frame from the same academy "An Appreciative Tribute to a Great Work of Art by the Jury of Awards..." also dated 1922. Some patched repair. 51"h. 38.75"w., framed, 59.75"h. 47"w. Sarah Porter (Farmington, Connecticut, 1813-1900) opened Miss Porter's School in 1843 which is today a private preparatory school for girls.
