Elga Grinvalde. Fragment of the inlaid pulpitum in San Miniato al Monte Basilica, Firenze. Oil on canvas, 30 x 30 cm. As we look at Grinvalde's paintings, we sense and appreciate their quintessentially Florentine atmosphere, where Renaissance passions run high, or experience chance encounters with the shadowy figures of former Florentine citizens in its dark and narrow streets. At the same time, we cannot help divining the spiritual mystery of the inlaid pulpitum in San Miniato al MonteBasilica, perched on the hilltop above Piazzale Michelangelo. The image of Ouroboros, shaped like a serpent or dragon and familiar from its frequent appearancein gnostic texts or alchemic symbols, invites us to reflect on the eternal process of cyclic regeneration.
