Exhibition: Vienna 2008, Shut and open at the same time. Secession, 29 February -13 April. The painter Philippe Decrauzat was born in Lausanne in 1974. He graduated from the École cantonale d'art in 1999 with a diplôme supérieur and took up a professorship there one year later. Today he lives between Lausanne and Paris. On the one hand, Decrauzat's oeuvre is characterised by his confident use of a wide variety of techniques, so that his work includes murals, paintings, sculptures, installations and videos, which he combines in numerous exhibitions. On the other hand, he works with a very limited colour palette with surfaces that vibrate through the use of optical effects. Philippe Decrauzat belongs to a generation of artists who are committed to a new conceptual concretism and address central questions about perception. The artistic examination of Russian Constructivism of the first half of the 20th century, but also of Minimalism and Op Art of the 1960s are an integral part of his works. In 2002 he won the Lausanne Prix Manor, followed by the Swiss Art Award 2005. In the present painting from 2008, Decrauzat plays with form and makes use of a shaped canvas, as is familiar, for example, from the work of Robert Mangold. The artist's skilful use of painted lines which become thinner and thinner towards the inner corners, drawing the viewer's eye to the black core of the painting, in combination with the unusually shaped canvas, gives the work a sense of almost being in motion. --------------- PHILIPPE DECRAUZAT (Lausanne 1974–lebt und arbeitet in Lausanne) Ohne Titel (black). 2008. Der Maler Philippe Decrauzat wird 1974 in Lausanne geboren. 1999 schliesst er sein Studium an der École cantonale d’art mit dem Diplôme supérieur ab und übernimmt dort ein Jahr später eine Professur. Heute lebt er zwischen Lausanne und Paris. Decrauzats Oeuvre zeichnet sich zum einen durch den souveränen Umgang mit unterschiedlichsten Medien aus, so dass sich Wandgemälde, Gemälde, Skulpturen, Installationen und Videos in seinem Werk finden, die er in zahlreichen Ausstellungen kombiniert. Zum anderen arbeitet er mit einer sehr begrenzten Farbpalette, deren Oberflächen er durch optische Effekte vibrieren lässt. Philippe Decrauzat gehört zu einer Generation von Künstlern, die sich einem neuen Konzept-Konkretismus verpflichtet fühlen und sich zentrale Fragen zur Wahrnehmung stellen. Die künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit dem russischen Konstruktivismus der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, aber auch mit dem Minimalismus und der Op-Art der 1960er Jahre sind fester Bestandteil seiner Werke. 2002 gewinnt er den Prix Manor, Lausanne gefolgt vom Swiss Art Award 2005. Beim vorliegenden Gemälde von 2008 spielt Decrauzat mit der Form und greift auf eine shaped canvas zurück, wie man sie z.B. auch von Robert Mangold kennt. Mit dem gekonnten Einsatz der unterschiedlich dicken Farbflächen, die zu den inneren Ecken immer dünner werden, zieht der Künstler den Blick des Betrachters auf den schwarzen Kern des Bildes und versetzt das Werk, in Kombination mit der ungewöhnlich geformten Leinwand, in Bewegung.
