Minas Gerais 1953 oil on board 33 x 41 cm (13 x 16 1/8 in.) unframed signed and dated lower right LOT ESSAY Brazilian painter, born in Nova Friburgo in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Spent the first 30 years of his life in Europe studying art, returning to Brazil in the late 1920s. Often depicting the picturesque romantic landscapes of Minas Gerais, a large inland state of southeastern Brazil, known for colonial era towns dating to the 18th century gold rush, cobblestone streets, ornate mansions and baroque churches. Guignard moved to Minas Gerias in the 1940s remaining there up to his death in 1962. Often painting in plein-aire the small town of Ouro Preto. This lot is a prime example of Alberto de Veiga Guignards work. CONDITION The painting is in good condition. Scattered minor losses along the lower edge. Minor loss visible to the sky. Overall craquelure. Inspection under UV light shows an even layer of heavy varnish. N.B. All lots are sold in as-is condition at the time of sale.
