Roman Selsky (Ukrainian, 1903-1990): Painter, graphic artist, and teacher; husband of Margit Selska. graduate of the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts (1927), studied in Paris with Fernand Leger. First president of Artes (1929-36), an association of experimental artists. Surrealism apparently influenced his early works. In the 1940s-1950s, under the Soviet rule, Selsky managed to avoid the socialist realism limits for a few realistic landscapes and dark still-lifes. His seashore paintings of 1950s-1960s influenced by Leger and Bonnard.
