The Serenade. Oil on canvas. Signed R.S. (Roman Selsky) on the Lower Left in Cyrillic letters. On verso inscribed title, dimensions and B.K.P.C. number (Cyrillic acronym for the number in Personal Catalog of Roman Selsky). Sight 12.5” x 9”. Frame 21”x 18”. Roman Selsky (Ukrainian, 1903-1990): Painter, graphic artist, and teacher; husband of Margit Selska. graduate of the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts (1927), studied in Paris with Fernand Leger. First president of Artes (1929-36), an association of experimental artists. Surrealism apparently influenced his early works. In the 1940s-1950s, under the Soviet rule, Selsky managed to avoid the socialist realism limits for a few realistic landscapes and dark still-lifes. His seashore paintings of 1950s-1960s influenced by Leger and Bonnard.
