Five putti stealing puppies, (Der Welpenraub). Oil on canvas. Restorations. According to Axel Heinrich, a difficult legible signature can be found'...T. WILLEBOR...'. (cf. Heinrich 2003, cat. nr. 38A) Provenance: Sale in Hilversum, 1965 (as mentioned by Heinrich 2003, cat. no. 38a); Private collection J. B. M. van der Meer, Bussum; Private collection, Antwerp Thomas Willeboirts Bosschaert's style shows a great influence of Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641). He was educated by Gerard Seghers (1591-1651) and soon developed as a successful master with a large studio. He collaborated with other artists such as Daniel Seghers (1590-1661), Jan van den Hoecke (1611-1651), Paul de Vos (1595-1678), Joannes Fyt (1609-1661) and Frans Snyders (1579-1657). The latter two can be referred to as possible authors for the dog and its puppies. The subject of this scene is not entirely clear. Five putti, one with flowers in his/her hair and a pennant in his/her hand, are stealing puppies from a furious mother dog. The theme could possibly have an allegorical meaning. It could also be interpreted as some sort of 'Spielerei', something fun to look at. Thomas Willeboirt Bosschaert painted this scene twice. For very similar unsigned painting, he collaborated with the animal painter Frans Snyders who painted the dogs (cf. Heinrich 2003, p. 207-208, cat. no. 38). The dogs on the canvas here in auction can not be attributed to Snyders, but to another anonymous artist who worked after his design. Apart from the dogs, the two versions only differ from each other in small details such as the flowers in the hair of the putti and the animals in the background. The two standing putti, far left and central, can also be found in the 'Double portrait of a man and a woman such as Dido and Aeneas, possibly Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg (1620-1688) and Louise Henriette van Oranje-Nassau (1627-1667) 'in the collection of the Bildergalerie around Schloss in Potsdam (RDKimages 269422) . M. van der Meer, Bussum; Private collectie, Antwerpen Thomas Willeboirts Bosschaert's stijl getuigt van een grote invloed van Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) en Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641). Hij genoot zijn opleiding bij Gerard Seghers (1591-1651) en ontwikkelde zich al snel als tot een succesvol meester met een groot atelier. Hij werkte samen met andere kunstenaars als Daniel Seghers (1590-1661), Jan van den Hoecke (1611-1651), Paul de Vos (1595-1678), Joannes Fyt (1609-1661) en Frans Snyders (1579-1657). Het onderwerp van dit tafereel is niet geheel duidelijk. Vijf putti, één met bloemen in het haar en een wimpel in de hand, stelen de puppies van een moeder hond. Het thema kan mogelijk een allegorische betekenis hebben, of bedoeld zijn als een soort spielerei, iets leuks om naar te kijken. Thomas Willeboirt Bosschaert schilderde dit tafereel twee maal. Voor een zeer gelijkend ongesigneerd schilderij werkte hij samen met de dierenschilder Frans Snyders (cf. Heinrich 2003, p. 207-208, cat. nr. 38). Dit exemplaar verschilt enkel in kleine details met het exemplaar hier in veiling. Zo verschillen de bloemen in het haar van de putti uiterst links, de manier waarop de wimpel wappert en is er een haan naast de geit in de achtergrond te zien. De honden in het exemplaar hier in veiling zijn niet door Frans Snyders geschilderd, maar door een anonieme kunstenaar naar diens voorbeeld. Gelijkaardige putti zijn terug te vinden in het 'Dubbelportret van een man en een vrouw als Dido en Aeneas, mogelijk Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg (1620-1688) en Louise Henriette van oranje-Nassau (1627-1667)' in de collectie van de Bildergalerie om Schloss in Potsdam (RDKimages 269422).
