Kees Salentijn is educated at the National Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam, department of free painting. O.B. Kat is his main teacher there. During his studies, Salentijn studies paintings in the Prado in Madrid and he stays for several months with a Berber family in Morocco. In the eighties Salentijn travels a lot to Spain. In this period he feels connected with artists of various movements, who more or less advocate spontaneous unconscious creation and who do not primarily pursue aesthetic portrayal. He combines the cheerful Cobra imagery with the influences of Spanish culture. One of the many characteristics of Salentijn's works is the experimental and diverse use of different materials. Drawings with pen, brush and / or pencil, but he also uses acrylic paint on canvas, collages, gouaches or a combination of these techniques. Kees Salentijn's work is characterized by diversity. In his view, one means is not necessarily better than another in art, as long as it is used correctly. One day Salentijn works figurative classical or expressive abstract. The other day childishly naive again. Kees Salentijn gets the inspiration mainly from Spain. The subjects vary from culture, overcrowded Spanish beaches, dances, ladies walking on beautiful boulevards, landscapes, parties. These themes are alternated at a rapid pace. His works thus not only characterize a great versatility, but also again and again underline his fiery passion for the most diverse styles in art.
