William Wilson Cowell (American, 1848-1910), Martime Scene oil on canvas, signed and dated 1878 at lower right, presented in a later gilt frame. DOA 10.5 x 18.5 in. Born in Boston, Cowell painted maritime scenes in Nova Scotia, New York, Nahant, Massachusetts, and Narragansett, Rhode Island. He also painted some scenes along the Great Lakes while living in Chicago. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with Edward Moran and John Faulkner, as well as being greatly influenced by the work of Alfred Thompson Bricher and Francis Augustus Silva.
